1st technical Seminar on Waste: “O (in)Sucesso da Recolha Seletiva em Portugal”

This event took place on the 6th of November 2015, at Coimbra College of Agriculture (ESAC).

The 1st technical Seminar on Waste aimed to promote the debate about separate collection in Portugal, to disseminate success initiates across Portugal and to discuss major challenges ahead.

O meeting program included panel discussions with a range of speakers, from national entity responsible for the management of packaging waste, to local authorities and companies that deal with collection and treatment of waste on a daily basis.

Invited speakers, together with the audience, looked into the collection using drop-off containers, drop-off centers, and door-to-door collection, and discussed the suitability of each collection model to achieve National targets, as defined in the strategic plan for municipal waste (PERSU2020).

We believe that the 1st Technical Seminar on Wastes stimulated the debate on separate collection models in Portugal, namely recycling rates; the advantages and disadvantages of the integration of separate and unsorted collection schemes; the success or failure of drop-off containers, currently in place in more than 90% of the Portuguese territory. At the same time, the seminar strengthened the relations among CERNAS researchers and the Society (local authorities, companies, associations and citizens).
