The College of Agriculture of Coimbra (ESAC) has over 127 years of history. The ESAC is a college integrated at the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, globally oriented to achieving the objectives of the polytechnic in the field of technology, science and agricultural engineering and tourism, including: develop qualified professionals, with high level of demand in technological, scientific, professional and cultural aspects; teach courses leading to the attainment of 1st and 2nd cycle education degrees, postgraduate and Technological Specialisation Courses (CETs); teaching short courses and issue the respective certificates and diplomas; conduct integrated research activities, preferably in research centres; community service in view to mutual appreciation; promote exchange with converging, national and international institutions; contribute as part of their activities for international cooperation and the encounter between peoples and communities.
The CERNAS uses the facilities and equipment available at the host Institution, located in the campus of the Superior School of Agriculture of Coimbra. Researchers have unrestricted access to computer network, scientific publications signed by ESAC or accessible through protocols, and infrastructure and equipment as follows:
Two multi-purpose work rooms (25m2 + 30 m2), equipped for carrying out remote sensing, geographic information systems, global positioning, image processing, data processing systems (databases and statistical package), biometrics, forest inventory, management and planning of natural resources;
A greenhouse for advanced research in physiology and physiological ecology, soil quality and the plant production;
Dendrometric, forestry exploration and firefighting equipment.
Two technology labs / pilot plants, dairies (250m2) and horticultural (190m2) and their respective support labs to chemical, rheological, biochemical and microbiological physical analysis (100m2 + 45m2);
A sensory analysis laboratory (60m2) with meeting rooms and 5 single proof cabins;
An experimental kitchen (20m2) with a multi-purpose laboratory space (50m2);
Refrigeration and freezing spaces (265m2) and warehouse services;
Network of compressed air, steam and chilled water;
Laboratory equipment (gas and liquid chromatography, UV spectrophotometry / VIS, lyophilizer, viscometers, texturometer LactoStar, Pro-milk, Meters aw, O2, CO);
Pilot scale equipment (UHT lines, cheese, butter, yoghurt, preserved, juices, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, swept surface evaporators, falling film, spray-dryer, fluidized bed dryer, Biostat ED fermenter, heat exchangers heat, etc.) and equipment adapted to “scaling-up” process;
Sheepfold (1.100m2), machine milking and cooling tank;
Access to 10 ha of sown pasture;
Multi-purpose laboratory (50 m2), greenhouses, microElisa reader, centrifuges, microscopes, magnifiers and electrophoresis system area,
Multi-purpose labs (112m2), Chemistry Analysis and Research (56m2) and Chromatography (40m2), technical and analytical balances, furnaces, Greenhouses , centrifuge, ultrasonic stirrer, distillers automatic titrators , samples digester, dual beam spectrophotometer UV / VIS, single beam spectrophotometer , HPLC chromatographs , ion chromatograph, gas chromatographs , spectrophotometer for water analysis and various laboratory equipment.
A microwave propagation laboratory that includes laminar flow and growth cameras, incubation and cooling greenhouses;
A herbarium with plant dryer, Sterilizing equipment, miniVIDAS, binocular loupes and microscopes;
Calculating means, databases and statistical packages for data processing .
